A Study on Detection Method of a Pedestrian Crossing for Visually Impaired Persons Using a Mobile Photo and Corresponding Aerial Photo with a Smartphone

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) It is difficult for visually impaired persons to recognize crosswalks, since they couldn’t find correct locations of crosswalks. In this paper, a method is proposed to recognize crosswalks with a smartphone to notify them with voice guidance. The location is to be decided using a mobile photo with a smartphone and an aerial photo fetched with GoogleMapAPI based on smartphone’s GPS information. Lines of crosswalks in both photos are extracted by image processing procedures such as binarization, edge detection and Hough transform. Then, the appropriate crosswalk location is decided with the lines by matching mobile photo lines and aerial photo ones. Using the additional aerial photo, recognition rate is improved compared with mobile photo based recognition, even if there are some occlusions in the mobile photo due to roadside trees, shrubberies, guardrails, cars, and so on. Experimental results with 125 images show 63% correct detection rate. It takes about 6 seconds for processing totally.
