Relationship between luminance distribution statistics of an image and gold perception

We investigated (1) the relationship between gold appearance, metallic appearance, and glossiness, and (2) what statistics of luminance distribution (mean, standard deviation, skewness, kurtosis) of a surface relates to gold and metallic appearance aiming at clarifying determining factors for gold appearance. The result showed that gold appearance more strongly correlates with metallic appearance than glossiness regardless of the shape of a stimulus. This result indicates that determining factors for gold appearance are similar to those for metallic appearance of a surface. Gold and metallic appearance changed depending on the standard deviation of the luminance values of the image. This result suggests that the standard deviation of the luminance distribution is one of the determining features for the gold, metallic appearance. |
