Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Yayoi Kusama is one of the influential contemporary artist in Japan. She is known as an artist of “polka dots”. However, her polka dots sometimes give viewers discomfort. Where does the discomfort and attractiveness of her works come from? We examined the impressions of her representative polka dot and its variations that changed density. We also analyzed the spatial frequency characteristics of the dot patterns that we used. Moreover, we investigated the relation between the disgust for the dot patterns and the individual disgust tendency measured by the DS-R (the disgust scale) in Japanese version. We found that the pattern that had the highest subjective density arouse discomfort feeling, which contained high contrast at mid-range of spatial frequencies. We also found that the participants who had strong disgust to contamination felt strong discomfort to the high density pattern. These results and previous findings suggest a possibility that this kind of discomfort derives from the avoidance system of the potential threats such as poisonous animals and sources of infection.
