[Memorial Lecture] Research and Development on Receiving System for UHDTV Satellite Broadcasting

(in English) Test satellite broadcasting of UHDTV started on August 1st, 2016. In 2018, satellite broadcasting of UHDTV will begin by using the right- and left-hand circular polarization in the 12-GHz band. ARIB STD-B63, which is the standard for UHDTV satellite receivers, standardized the currently used IF (1032.23 to 2070.25 MHz) and the left-hand circular polarization IF (2224.41 to 3223.25 MHz). STD-B63 also defined the specifications of a fiber optical transmission system for the IF signals. Therefore, we fabricated an optical transmission system, which can transmit the right- and left-hand circular polarization IF bands, and evaluated the transmission characteristics of 16APSK. For coaxial cables, it is important to evaluate the shielding effectiveness of the cables because the left-hand circular polarization IF band overlaps with the 2.4-GHz band wireless LAN system. Hence, we measured the shielding effectiveness of the coaxial cables and showed the possibility of the frequency sharing of the IF system and the wireless LAN system. A diameter of a receiving antenna is also an important parameter for the satellite broadcast receiving system. Therefore, we studied a service availability of UHDTV satellite broadcasting with the required C/N of 16APSK, which was obtained by the latest experiment results with a broadcasting satellite, by changing the diameter. We confirmed that the annual service availability of 99.9% and the worst-month service availability of 99.7% can be obtained with a 45-cm diameter receiving antenna in Tokyo.
