Reduction of modal birefringent fluctuation in 1-µm-band mode-detection optical time domain reflectometry

(in English) We have proposed an optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) that conducts measurements in the two-mode region of widely used single-mode fibers to detect optical loss increases due to macro/micro-bending early. To apply the technique to the maintenance of trunk lines that establish communication between central offices, it is essential for ensure the required dynamic range to introduce coherent detection. In coherent detection OTDRs, amplitude fluctuations that degrade loss measurement accuracy generally occur in the OTDR traces owing to the interference between backscattered lights and the polarization mismatch between the backscattered light and the local light. Unlike conventional coherent detection OTDRs, there exists another amplitude fluctuation resulting from both the modal birefringence that induces the intensity distribution evolution of the second-order mode along the fibers and the LP-mode separation characteristics of the mode coupler. In this paper, we describe the reduction techniques of the amplitude fluctuations, and confirm the usefulness experimentally.
