A Note on Classification of Tunnel Working Face Images toward Estimation of Rock Elastic Wave Velocity

(in English) Comprehension of rock elastic wave velocity is one of the most important issues regarding appropriate construction of rock structures such as tunnels. This paper presents a method that automatically classifies tunnel working face images according to elastic wave velocity. This is the first work toward automatic estimation of elastic wave velocity. The proposed method extracts visual features from working face images to capture colors, textures and cracks and uses these features to construct a support vector machine-based classifier. The proposed method enables comprehension of engineering characteristics of rocks without physical measurement that requires geophones. This paper reports classification results with different kinds of visual features to reveal the effectiveness of each feature in classification of working face images.
