MMSE Based Low Complexity Maximum Likelihood Detection Using Successive Interference Canceller for MIMO-OFDM Hardware Implementation

(in English) In this paper, we propose a computational cost reduction method for
the maximum likelihood detection (MLD) which is a nonlinear MIMO
detection method in MIMO-OFDM systems. The proposed method utilizes
the minimum mean square error (MMSE) detection method and the
successive interference canceller (SIC). In MIMO communication
systems, since interference between streams occurs at receivers, it is
necessary to separate the interfered signals at each
receiver. Zero-forcing (ZF) and MMSE are well known linear detection
methods that can separate the signals with reasonable processing
costs. As for nonlinear detection methods, the MLD can be regarded as
the most accurate detection method. However, since the MLD checks all
possible candidate symbol combinations, the computational cost depends
on the number of antennas and the modulation levels, and the cost
might be enormous as the antenna number and the modulation levels
increase. Motivated by this, in this paper, we propose a method to
reduce the symbol combinations in MLD using linear detection method,
MMSE, and SIC. We compared the proposed method with the K-best method
which utilizes QR decomposition to reduce the computational cost in
MLD. The experimental results show that the proposed method archives
better BER performance with lower computational cost compared to the
K-best method.
