Aerial image by retroreflective corner reflector array

(in English) We have developed a retroreflective optical device to realize a long-focus aerial imaging display with a long aerial image pop-up distance. The developed optical device consists of a plurality of rectangular corner reflectors arranged in an array and has char-acteristics of retroreflection in the lateral direction and specular reflection in the longitudinal direction. The corner reflectors are manufactured by applying a nonreflective film and a reflective film to a glass plate and cutting it. The imaging position of the aerial image can be controlled by changing the longitudinal and lateral lengths and angles of the corner reflectors according to the position in the optical device. We have implemented an optical device with a focal length of 2 meters (= pop-up distance). We have prototyped an aerial image display by the optical device. We have confirmed that the designed focal length was realized by placing the real object at the imaging position of the aerial image and comparing the motion parallax between them. It is also possible to project video on the optical device with a projector, and also realized the aerial image with a video background.
