Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The phenomenon that performing repeatedly a perceptual task increases its sensitivity is referred to as perceptual learning. Our aim was to clarify 1) if perceptual learning is observed for material perception tasks, and 2) if performing tasks, not just observing stimuli, is crucial for perceptual learning in material perception. We used computer-graphics images exhibiting both perceptual glossiness and translucency. The observers were divided into two groups according to required tasks: the glossiness group and translucency group. These two groups performed the assigned tasks for the same stimuli for 10 days in the training phase, and we compared the task performances for both glossiness and transparency discrimination before and after the training. The results demonstrated that the task performance for only the material feature the observers trained increased after the training in each observer group, but not for the untrained feature. These results suggest that perceptual learning in material perception required repeating the material judgment tasks, not just observing the material stimuli.
