A Study for Ball Tracking in Basketball Analysis using Multi-View Image Sequences

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In this study, we examine a tracking method of basketball players that can avoid occlusion using multi-view image sequences and OpenPose. Based on the images captured by hand-held cameras, we detect players in the images corresponding to each viewpoint by using OpenPose, and project them to a two-dimensional map viewed from just above the court to integrate multi-view images. We deal with the movement of players in consecutive frames as a trajectory in each viewpoint. When occlusion occurs at a certain viewpoint and tracking becomes impossible, the projection of the trajectory on the 2-D map is interrupted. However, since occlusion does not occur at other viewpoints, it can be assumed that the trajectory on the 2-D map is connected. In viewpoint images where the track is interrupted, tracking will be done for a while after new players are found. Subsequently, by evaluating the consistency with the continuous trajectory of the other viewpoint on the 2-D map, correspondence with an appropriate trajectory can be performed again. We developed a method to track players while avoiding occlusion by consolidating multi-view time series data as trajectories.
