Basic Evaluation of a Planar Magic-T Based Balun and Its Application to Variable Phase Shift Balun

(in English) In this study, a novel magic-T based planar balun and its application to a variable phase shift balun are proposed. The proposed balun consists of a planar magic-T and a quarter-wavelength microstrip line only. In addition, by connecting variable capacitances to the proposed balun, a variable phase shift balun which changes the transmission phase in the balanced-unbalanced transformation is realized. Prototypes of the planar balun and variable phase shift balun are designed, fabricated and measured to confirm the proposed concept. Better than 2-dB insertion loss and 10-dB return loss were obtained from 4.5 to 5.8 GHz for the planar balun. Furthermore, better than 3-dB insertion loss and 198-degree phase shift were obtained for the proposed variable phase shift balun. Functions of balance-unbalance transforming and variable phase shift are integrated in a simple structure.
