A Trial Analysis of Driving Behavior on Expressway using Semi-Automated Vehicle

This study aims to investigate how semi-automated driving system affects elderlies and non-elderlies driving behavior from the viewpoint of traffic risks. In our experiment, we let participants (fifteen elderlies and fifteen non-elderlies) drive on expressway using level 2 semi-automated vehicle and measure their driving behavior (e.g. scanning behavior, eye closure ratio) using vision-based sensor. As a result of our experiment, we found out that drivers’ scanning time for checking safety while driving semi-automated vehicle is longer than that of non-automated vehicle. The result indicates that semi-automated driving system could relieve drivers’ steering control / vehicle speed control tasks, this could lead drivers scan around vehicle more carefully. In contrast, our result also shows that three non-elderlies felt drowsy while driving semi-automated vehicle. |
