Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The present study examined the influence of active and passive viewing of optical flow (OF) and that of the predictability of a change in OF on vection. In experiment, three conditions, (1) Control (with or without active control of OF direction), (2) Cognition (the participants were instructed that OF represented objects’ motion or self motion), (3) Attention (with or without a visual target, which was attentionally tracked by the participants, superimposed on OF), were set as independent variables. Results indicated that vection latency was shorter in the ‘self motion’ condition than in the ‘objects’ motino’ condition. Moreover, reported vection was stronger in the condition without a visual target than in the condition with the target. These results suggest that factor of cognition (instructed that OF was objects’ or self motion) have some influences on vection. Our findings are inconsistent with Seno et al. (2010) previously reported vection is restrained by active control of OF. We discuss a possibility that the inconsistency stemmed from a difference in the predictability of a change in OF between the current and previous (Seno et al. 2010) studies.
