Effects of direction and frequency components in vibration on visually induced motion sickness

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Visual stimuli that induce visually induced motion sickness include multiple motion components. Bos et al. (2008) proposed that visually induced motion sickness is evoked when the rotation axis of visual stimulus and the observer's subjective gravity axis are different. Diels et al. (2003) reported that the severity of visually induced motion sickness varied with the frequency of the oscillating fore and aft motion. From these, the direction component of motion and the frequency component of vibration are considered as factors that induce visually induced motion sickness. The present study examined that the effect of vibration direction and frequency of vibration included in the image on visually induced motion sickness. In the experiment, the vibration direction condition (pitch, roll) and frequency condition (0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30 (Hz)) was set as independent variables. The head mounted display was used to present a visual stimulus simulating the movement of a pitch or roll axis in a space simulating a plain in a mountainous area. The severity of visually induced motion sickness was measured by Simulator Sickness Questionnaire and the amount of postural sway. As a result of experiments, the severity of motion sickness changed according to the frequency of vibration.
