In a self-driving car that is introduced in stages, it is supposed that the driving operation will be taken over between the driver and the system. Under such situations where the driver does not drive, it is predicted that motion sickness will occur because the direction of travel cannot be predicted (Rolnick and Lubow, 1991; Feenstraet al., 2010). When motion sickness occurs, cognitive functions decline (Gresty et al., 2008), and it may have some influence on the driver's performance when taking over. The purpose of this study is to prevent the occurrence of new accidents due to the introduction of self-driving cars. In Experiment 1, we confirm the effects of the presence or absence of operation and the possibility of predicting the direction of travel on motion sickness. In Experiment 2 and 3, we clarify the influence on the driving task when the driver who developed motion sickness takes over. In Experiment 1, we set four conditions that combined the presence or absence of operation and whether to predict the direction of travel, and presented a visual stimulus imitating the road on which the car travels on the head mounted display. As a result of measuring the severity of motion sickness using the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire and a five-level subjective evaluation, it was higher in the absence of operation. |
