Design of a Frequency-Tunable Balun Using Wideband Planar Magic-T

(in English) We have reported a magic-T based planar balun and its application to a variable phase shift balun and variable attenuation balun. In this study, a frequency tunable balun using a new wideband planar magic-T is proposed. The wideband planar Magic-T is designed by replacing a shorted quarter-wavelength slot line to a circular disc open end to reduce the frequency dependence. By connecting an additional microstrip line and a variable capacitor to the wideband magic-T, a frequency tunable balun which changes the passband of the balanced-unbalanced transformation is realized. Prototypes of the wideband planar magic-T and frequency tunable balun are designed to confirm the proposed concept. Better than 1-dB insertion loss and 10-dB return loss were obtained from 5 to 9 GHz.
