Contrast sensitivity functions measured on luminance-variegated background

(in English) In classical studies, contrast sensitivity functions (CSFs) were measured under full adaptation to a uniform background. Thus, it is unclear whether they reflect sensitivity characteristics in a scene with variegated luminance such as our daily life environment. Here, we psychophysically investigated the effects of the dynamic range widths of the textured background on CSFs. The test stimulus was a Gabor patch on a uniform rectangle pedestal, whose luminance was randomly chosen from five levels in each trial. The background was either of horizontal textures with different luminance dynamic range widths. In the results, the sensitivity was maximum at the pedestal luminance close to the mean luminance of the background for lower spatial frequency targets, but not for higher spatial frequency targets. These results suggest that the mechanisms of sensitivity optimization to the background luminance distributions differ among spatial frequencies of target stimuli.
