Effects of Binocular Disparity on Perception of Large Depth in Natural Images

(in English) Effects of binocular disparity on perceived depth in natural images were examined. Stereo photographs were presented on a 55-inch OLED display and the magnitudes of binocular disparity were modulated by changing the inter-camera distances. The observer evaluated the depth impression of the 3D photographs by choosing from alternatives such as “Natural depth is seen”, “Elongated or exaggerated in depth”, and “Compressed or flattened”. The results showed that the effects of binocular disparity were limited and that natural depth was perceived for the most conditions. In the second experiment, abilities to discriminate between 2D and 3D photographs were tested. The results showed that many observers could not tell the difference while some showed high sensitivity to disparity. It appears that the effects of binocular disparity on natural images are limited although those are obvious for some people.
