Acquisition and Maintenance of Predictive Accommodation

(in English) When we shift our eyes to objects at various distances, not only eye movement but also accommodation occurs. Accommodation usually has a longer latency than eye movement, resulting in an out-of-focus period after each gaze shift. However, it has been shown that phase lag of accommodation is shortened when a visual stimulus is temporally periodic, suggesting that the accommodation system acquires predictive control. The purpose of this study is to clarify acquisition and maintenance characteristics of predictive accommodation control. Experiments employing periodic accommodative stimuli revealed that the phase lag is shortened and the gain is temporarily increased as early as in the 2nd cycle of the stimulation. It is also shown that the accommodation response is maintained in the dark for about 1.6 s without any visual stimulation after several cycles of stimulus presentation.
