Sensitivity differences between color discrimination and supra-threshold color difference along hues.

We psychophysically measured sensitivities of color discrimination and supra-threshold color difference perception along hues in order to elucidate the change in sensitivities due to the amplitude of stimulus color differences. The sensitivities of supra-threshold color differences were estimated using the MLDS method 1) for small color difference stimuli and 2) for all stimuli including larger color differences. The results showed that the sensitivity change along hues were more prominent for the supra-threshold colors than the color discrimination. In addition, the sensitivity change was further more pronounced when estimated for stimuli including large color differences than when estimated only for small color difference stimuli. Finally, the hues with high sensitivities corresponded to approximately the color category boundaries. These results show the possibility that the impacts of color categories on perceptual color differences increases with the magnitude of stimulus color differences. |
