Study on a basic implementation of real-time composition with shot images toward broadcast-use virtual reality movies

(in English) Basic implementation of real-time composition with multiple shot images was studied for producing broadcast-use virtual reality (VR) movies. For realizing high-resolution VR movies and its broadcast services, developing of a high-resolution VR production equipment is needed. We employed a pixel interpolation method for converting fish-eye images shot by radially aligned cameras to equirectangular-projection (ERP) images and compositing to obtain high-quality VR movies. We implemented the method in a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and prototyped an experimental VR production system. We confirmed that the experimental system could perform live composition of VR movies that were displayed on an 8K monitor and a head-mounted display (HMD).
