A Study on Remote Production using Next Generation Mobile Relay FPU

(in English) The authors have been researching a next-generation mobile relay FPU (Field Pick-up Unit) for use in mobile live production such as road races. By utilizing TDD (Time Division Duplex) scheme, we enabled the system to transmit the IP signals in addition to the conventional TS (Transport Stream) signals, aiming to apply it for mobile remote production. In this report, we describe the design of IP signal transmission function and show the result of laboratory experiments using prototype system to evaluate its performance. The result showed that the system demonstrated bidirectional IP transmission and multiplex transmission of IP and TS signals with throughputs close to the target rates. The system also achieved the video transmission delay of 20.7 ms via uplink using a codec with delay of approximately 10 ms and the IP transmission delay of 11.5 ms at the maximum via downlink when the IP traffic has a margin for the target rates, resulting in a construction of low-latency link that is below the permissible delay of remote production. Furthermore, we conducted a trial assuming a mobile remote production and confirmed that the remote control of camera was enabled through a prototype system without any discomfort.
