Effects of reduction in arousal on the dynamic properties of microsaccades

(in English) In order to establish a technique to measure the level of arousal quantitatively, we conducted an experiment that caused a decrease in arousal while maintaining gaze position and analyzed the dynamic characteristics of the microsaccade (MS) from the fixation eye movements measured during the experiment. The amplitude-peak velocity and the frequency of MS immediately before the slow eye movements (SEMs), which occur during sleep onset, were analyzed. The result showed that the peak velocity of MS decreased during the 60 seconds immediately before the SEM compared with the state in which wakefulness was maintained. In addition, the occurrence of MS became intermittent, and the power of the gaze fluctuation in the 0.5-3.0 [Hz] band was enhanced just before the onset of the SEM. These results indicate that changes in MS dynamic characteristics, such as a decrease in peak MS velocity and MS frequency, occur with decreased arousal.
