Effect of action ability on peripersonal space representation

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Peripersonal space (PPS) is the space immediately around the body in which the body interacts directly with its surroundings. PPS has been linked to danger avoidance and prediction of action capabilities. A previous study found that hand immobilization modulates hand-centered PPS. This study investigates whether whole-body immobilization affects body-centered PPS representation. The PPS range was measured based on visuotactile interaction. Participants wore head-mounted displays and were instructed to respond quickly to tactile stimuli delivered to their chests while observing a visual probe approaching or receding from their bodies. Body immobilization was implemented by placing participants in a 0.9 m3 cube box in real and virtual environments (box versus no-box condition). PPS was defined as the range within which the visual probe facilitated tactile detection (visual facilitation effect [VFE]). Results showed that, in the box condition, VFE was constantly observed at all the distances of the approaching probe from the body, while it decreased with increasing the distance in the no-box condition. Thus, the PPS boundary was only observed in the no-box condition. This suggests that the body immobilization can expand body-centered PPS representation.
