Investigation of the recovery process of the VIMS severity induced by yaw rotation stimulus

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The symptoms similar to those of motion sickness that occur when viewing images are called VIMS, and it is a concern in the spread of VR contents. However, the method to prevent or suppress VIMS has not yet been established. This study clarifies the correspondence between the process of occurrence and recovery of the VIMS caused by observing images by quantitatively evaluating the severity of the VIMS that changes from time to time. In the experiment of this study, visual stimuli rotating at 70 (deg/s) around the Yaw axis in a space that simulated a field between mountains were presented to the HMD, and four different presentation time conditions (300, 600, 900, and 1200 (s)) of the visual stimuli were used. At this time, the severity of sickness during the presentation and non-presentation of the visual stimuli was measured over time using the subjective response switch with 11 levels of subjective evaluation. As a result, there was a moderate positive correlation between the standard deviation of the slope of the initiation process/slope of the recovery process of VIMS and the average peak severity. This result suggested that the standard deviation of the slope of the onset process/slope of the recovery process of VIMS was an index of susceptibility to sickness.
