Design of locomotion method in virtual reality using walking-in-place based on a perceived velocity

(in English) We revealed of relationship between the step frequency of walking-in-pace and the velocity that perceived from movement of avatar in VR using psychophysical methods. This study consisted of two different experiments. In both experiments, random-dot stimuli that diffuse were displayed on Head Mounted Display (HMD). In experiment 1, 15 participants observed standard stimuli of moving at 1.11 (m/s), and then adjusted the velocity of the comparison stimuli to be five different velocities (1/3, 1/2, 1, 2 and 3 (times) the velocity of the standard stimuli). In experiment 2, 9 participants adjusted the velocity of stimuli to match the step frequency of walking-in-place which five different step frequency (0.80, 1.18, 1.58, 2.38, 3.17 (steps/s)). As a result, in experiment 1, the relationship between the velocity of comparison stimuli (v_s) and perceived velocity (v_p) were shown as v_s = 1.34v_p^0.61, and in experiment 2, the relationship between the step frequency of walking-in-place (f) and velocity of stimuli (v_s) were shown as v_s=1.65f^0.708.
