Semi-automatic Manga Colorization Using Flat Colored Images

(in English) To create color comics, manual colorization process is required, which incurs high labor costs. To solve the problem, we previously proposed a semi-automatic colorization method by inputting a pair of a screen-tones image and a flat-colored image. Although this approach can reduce the cost, it still requires manual preparation of flat-colored images. Thus, in this paper, we propose a method to automatically create screen-tones images and flat-colored images from color illustrations on the Internet. Experiments show that the colorization network can be adequately trained with the dataset automatically created by the proposed method although the colorization accuracy is slightly lower than that of manually prepared training data.
