Handwritten Text Detection in Manga based on Deep Learning

(in English) In this study, we tackle a problem of detecting bounding boxes of handwritten texts in a manga image. The detection of handwritten text positions in manga can be applied to various downstream tasks such as automatic translation and image completion. To this end, we build a new dataset with bounding box annotations of handwritten texts on Manga109 dataset, and apply an object detection method for natural images to our problem. In addition, in order to improve the detection accuracy of handwritten texts, we propose a data augmentation method that increases training data by synthesizing handwritten texts and a method that integrates the detection results using images converted into line drawings.
