The effect of ocular microtremor on vernier acuity by a retinal neural mechanism model considering the influence of eye optics
Junya Sakai, Takeshi Kohama (Kindai Univ.)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Vernier acuity is the perceptual accuracy of identifying the phase difference between two line segments or lattices. It is well known that the vernier acuity exceeds the spatial resolution derived from the distribution characteristics of retinal photoreceptors, but this mechanism is still poorly understood. Kubo and Kohama (2018) quantitatively showed that the vernier acuity is brought about by ocular tremor based on a mathematical retinal model simulation. However, the simulations do not account for diffraction due to ocular optics, which remains controversial. In order to investigate the effect of ocular diffraction on the detection of phase differences between lines corresponding to vernier acuity, we performed simulations on Kubo and Kohama's retinal mathematical model by applying two lines with a phase difference more diminutive than the diameter of a cone cell as input stimuli, taking into account the effect of ocular optics. The results show that even when ocular diffraction is taken into account, the accuracy of retention of phase difference information between lines is improved by the fluctuation effect of the ocular tremor.
