[Special Talk] Lightning observation at Tokyo Skytree

(in English) On May 22nd, 2022, Tokyo Skytree celebrated its 10th anniversary. In collaboration with the University of Tokyo and Tobu Tower Skytree Co., Ltd, the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI) began observing lightning strikes, specifically, direct measurement of lightning current waveforms at Tokyo Skytree a few days before its completion of construction on March 1st, 2012. The observation period of 10 years has passed. The purpose of lightning observation is to statistically accumulate current waveform parameters of lightning (current amplitude, steepness, amount of transferred charge, and so on.), which is a "natural phenomenon", by directly measuring the time variation of lightning current. In addition to the purpose, monitoring lightning strikes is necessary for the operation of the broadcasting tower. The main objectives of this research are to accumulate the observation results of lightning discharge and to clarify the lightning phenomena by conducting optical observations of lightning strikes simultaneously with the observation of lightning current waveforms. Although lightning flash tends to strike at high ground structures, it is difficult to determine where the lightning will eventually strike to them if there are ground structures of similar height, even if the thundercloud arrives directly overhead, as these reasons direct observations of lightning have been limited worldwide. Therefore, the Tokyo Skytree, a very high ground structure where a reasonable number of lightning strikes were expected, was considered to be an ideal landmark for lightning observation.
