This year marks the 70th anniversary of the start of full-version broadcasting of television in Japan in February 1953. It has also been more than 20 years since the name of the society was changed from “The Institute of Television Engineers of Japan” to “The Institute of Image Information and Television Engineers” in December 1996, and the Media Engineering (ME) Research Group was established in April 2002 by integrating the three research groups of MIP, NIM and VIS, respectively. An overview of the changes during this period revealed that (1) “personalized portable media” have become deeply intervening in human sensation and/or perception and information exchange, and (2) people have rapidly lost opportunities for direct connection with society and nature. As a result, (3) the distinction between the real-world and the virtual-world (i.e., cyberspace) has become extremely blurred. In addition, (4) the sudden occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic three years ago accelerated the modal shift to the virtual world on a global scale. In light of the above, the following three points should be noted that; (a) Promotion of technological development with full awareness of the strong appeal of personalized information media (especially images) to the senses and further consideration of safety, (b) Development of media and promotion of literacy education that enable awareness of the “difference between the real- and the virtual- world”, and (c) Promotion of age-appropriate support by education and ME to enable individualized communication in English-speaking countries while taking advantage of the unique culture rooted in the “homogeneity” that characterizes the Japanese. As a dream for the future, I hope that the development of information media that take into account not only individuality but also the characteristics of the world’s peoples and regions will make it possible to share the rich diversity of the real and virtual worlds. |
