Prototype of a High-Resolution and Wide-Viewing Head-Mounted Display Using Multi Display Panels

(in English) We developed a high-resolution and wide-viewing head-mounted display (HRWV-HMD) with 8640 (horizontal) × 2160 (vertical) pixels and a horizontal viewing angle of 180 ° using multiple display panels. The HRWV-HMD comprises four high-resolution panels, those driving circuits, four prototype Fresnel lenses designed using optical simulations, and an inertial measurement unit. The HMD can be realized to display the images clipped from a video of 360 ° according to the head direction in real time. We have demonstrated the high-resolution display with a horizontal viewing angle of 180 ° on the HMD that could play a 16K-resolution 360 ° video at a frame frequency of 29.97 Hz with a previously developed high-resolution VR video playback and rendering system. Furthermore, we discuss the feasibility of future broadcasting media with application of such immersive-feel display devices and contents that broaden the television frame in the post-8K era.
