Estimation from fNIRS measurements of brain regions that contribute to prediction

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In order to devise a rehabilitation approach to reinstate driving ability in patients with higher-order cognitive deficits, we probed the feasibility of gauging the neural activity associated with prediction through functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) measurements. We examined the changes in neural activity associated with the prediction by computing the disparity in responses between a step-by-step prediction task and a task where the prediction was precluded using identical visual stimuli. The findings revealed that in most participants, the prediction task primarily elicited activation in brain regions typically associated with decision-making and working memory. These results suggest that they could serve as biomarkers for the neuro-rehabilitation of predictive functions critical to the resumption of motor vehicle driving.
