A Note on Pass Area Estimation Considering Positional Coordinate Information of American Football

In this paper, we propose two methods for estimating the probability of a successful pass by calculating player reachable area and visualizing the probability of a successful pass by angle based on a two-dimensional positional coordinate data set in American football. Recent developments in information technology have led to research on player and ball tracking, play classification, and performance evaluation. However, advanced analysis, such as pass analysis based on specific situations and visualization of player placement on the field in real time, has not been conducted in previous research. In American football, there is a tactical package called assignment, in which 11 players follow a specific movement to move the ball forward, which is highly dependent on the number of yards gained, the most important indicator in American football. Among these, passing tactics have not been analyzed, despite the fact that they are considered important because the average yards gained from a successful pass is larger than that of a successful run. Here, based on a detailed dataset that has been made public in recent years, we calculate the reachable range of players considering velocity and acceleration during the time between the quarterback's throwing the ball and the wide receiver's arrival, and calculate success values based on the percentage of allies per area. The proposed method not only demonstrates its effectiveness, but also enables the evaluation of the range that was not actually thrown in the visualization process, thus realizing advanced tactical analysis. |
