Artificial intelligence super-resolution technology for optical satellite images

(in English) In recent years, the need for services and solutions using satellite imagery has been increasing. By using satellite imagery, it is possible to observe a wide area. On the other hand, since satellite imagery are taken at a high altitude, there is an issue in that ground resolution is degraded compared to drones and aircraft. Therefore, if it is possible to generate high-resolution imagery using super-resolution technology from satellite imagery, it is expected that the use of satellite imagery will expand by reducing the cost of introducing imagery. This time, we utilized our own satellite imagery simulation technology to perform fine-tuning of AI super-resolution. Specifically, we created a lot of training data that accurately simulates the resolution and blur characteristics of satellite imagery based on high-resolution aerial photographs. As a result, the precision reproducibility of small objects has improved in super-resolution, which improves satellite imagery with a resolution of 30 cm to the equivalent of 15 cm. Additionally, as a result of comparing the vehicle detection precision of object detection AI using imagery before and after super-resolution processing, we confirmed that the detection rate twice was increased by super-resolution processing.
