[Memorial Lecture] Blur Compensated Video Coding and Power Controlled Image Reduction for Ultrahigh Definition Television

(in English) In future advanced broadcasting, it is assumed that ultrahigh definition videos such as 4K and 8K will be encoded with higher compression than current broadcasting. Therefore, we focus on changes in degree of blur that is likely to occur within and between pictures in ultrahigh definition video, and develop a video coding method to improve the accuracy of intra- and inter-picture predictions by blur compensation. In addition, even when broadcasting of video take with an 8K camera is reduced to 4K, artifacts such as block distortion are likely to occur in areas where coding difficulty is high. To suppress this artifact, we develop an image reduction method that controls the amount of reduction of spatial high-frequency power at each pixel position according to the coding difficulty. Experiments show that the proposed video coding method has higher prediction efficiency for intra- and inter-picture predictions than conventional Versatile Video Coding / H.266 video coding method. In addition, they show that the proposed image reduction method is more effective in suppressing artifacts than conventional image reduction method with Bicubic interpolation filter. Discussions show that the validity of the results by analyzing selection rate of intra- and inter-picture predictions with the blur compensation in the proposed video coding method, and effect of reduced coding difficulty in the proposed image reduction method.
