Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In recent years, research and development of Augmented Reality Head-Up Displays (AR-HUD) that overlay information onto the entire windshield of vehicles have been advancing. AR-HUD is anticipated as a highly safe media of information provision because it does not require drivers to divert their gaze from the front. However, accidents due to drivers' over-reliance and misuse of driving support systems have been increasing, prompting warnings from authorities such as the National Police Agency and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism. If drivers over-rely on the system and mistakenly assume that a lack of information from the system indicates safety, there is a risk of serious accidents if the system fails to provide accurate information. Previous studies suggest that the higher the quality and quantity of information provided to the driver, the greater the potential for over-reliance. Since AR-HUD can provide high-quality information, such as highlighting critical objects, it is considered that it may lead to driver over-reliance. Therefore, this study focuses on assistance at highway merging areas, which is a challenge in the social implementation of Autonomous vehicles. By comparing driver behaviors with AR-HUD and traditional information provision methods, we examined the positive effect of making it easier to notice merging vehicles and the negative effect of fostering over-reliance. Experimental results suggest that AR-HUD information provision has the effect of directing the driver's gaze toward merging areas more effectively than traditional methods, but it also carries the risk of inducing driver over-reliance.
