Effects of peripheral visual field on comfortable viewing with interocular vertical/rotational misalignment of stereoscopic 3D images

(in English) The literature reported the effects of interocular vertical misalignment on comfortability and visual fatigue in binocular stereoscopic images. However, there are relatively large differences in the tolerance limits among the literature. The purpose of the study is to clarify the effects of peripheral visual field on the difference. In the experiment, using some types of images for interocular vertical and rotational misalignment, we obtained subjective scoring on comfortability in conditions where apertures shielded the peripheral visual field corresponding to the image surroundings, or uniform black, grey or textures surrounded the image. The results showed that the decrease in comfort as a function of amount of vertical or rotational misalignment was the largest in the texture condition and the smallest in the aperture condition, while no difference was found between uniform black and uniform grey conditions. The result suggests that the comfortability is more reduced with interocular vertical/rotational misalignment in the conditions in which binocular fusion is more induced in peripheral visual field independent from the binocular image presented.
