Assessing groundwater migration or groundwater position is critical in elucidating the slope-formation process or in preventing slope disaster. This study investigated the effectiveness of Phase-noise-compensated (PNC) optical frequency domain reflectometry in detecting temperature change inside a mortar specimen with a diameter of 77 mm and length of 2,000 mm caused by the heating of a copper wire inside the specimen. After heating the wire, the temperature increase was lower at higher water-content zones where the specimen surface was partly covered with water to mimic groundwater or higher moisture zone in the ground. The result shows that lower temperature increases may also be detected where groundwater flows or stays around a borehole compared to no groundwater zones. Therefore, the PNC-OFDR appears to be a promising way to detect groundwater. |
