Visual Adaptation to Expansion of Field of View and Neck Rotation in Virtual World
Masayuki Mizutani, Shunji Satoh (UEC)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) ince our visual field angle is horizontally limited within ±100°, we have to rotate our neck or body toward target objects located at opposite direction of visual axes i.e 180°. The purpose of this study is to implement (1) a method to widen the field of view virtually by applying a new rendering method in a virtual environment, and (2) a method to amplify neck rotation virtually on a head-mounted display. We then evaluate these methods quantitatively through psychological experiments. When using each of method (1) or (2) individually, human-subjects reactions were similar to the ones of prism adaptation, in which human subjects required 20-30 exposure of trials adapted in order to adapt the new visual environment. However, when using the both (1) and (2) simultaneously, we found that the human subjects did not require adaptation process to the new visual environment.
