The mechanism of Motion aftereffect to illusory global rotation

When Gabor stimuli with gratings of two different motions (drifting horizontally or vertically) are arranged in a square shape, the global rotational illusion is perceived. In our previous studies, we have reported rotational motion aftereffect (MAE) induced by adaptation to this illusory rotation and investigated factors affecting the MAE. In the present study, we investigated the effects of areas between the adaptation stimulus and test stimulus on the duration of MAE by manipulating the shape of test stimulus. The result showed that the duration of MAE was shorter when the size of overlapped area between the adaptation and test stimuli was increased. Based on the results obtained, the mechanism of the rotational MAE is discussed in the context of neurophysiological and psychophysical points of view. |
