Many studies have explored potential mediators of the relationship between screen time and mental health, with gaming being a particularly prominent focus. However, prior research has relied on associational analyses, making it difficult to infer mediation effects within a causal framework. Without a properly identified causal relationship, conclusions about the mechanism remain speculative. Building on previous work that found positive causal impact of gaming on mental health through a natural experiment, this study applies causal mediation analysis to examine the mechanisms underlying this effect. Our results indicate that reduced sleep duration acts as a mediator, partially offsetting the mental health benefits of gaming. In contrast, gaming duration itself exhibits no mediating effect. While this preliminary report does not include all necessary robustness checks for a rigorous causal mediation analysis, the findings highlight the critical role of sleep duration in shaping the mental health effects of digital media consumption. |
