Assessing the Impact of Anime on Consumer Behavior

While the influence of digital media on human consumption behavior attracts both policy and general interest, as seen in the cultural phenomenon of "sacred site pilgrimage" in Japan, there is limited empirical research that rigorously examines the causal relationship. This study examines the impact of anime broadcasts on consumer behavior, using the popular anime 'Bocchi the Rock!' as a quasi-experimental setting. Analyzing musical instrument data from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry through difference-in-differences analysis, we found that the anime's broadcast led to a 9.3% increase in production and 13.0% increase in sales of guitars featured in the show. |
