Quantum computers are known to be able to efficiently solve problems that have been unsolved by conventional Neumann-type computers. However, quantum information theory has been given priority in the research and development stage in the field of information science, and it is generally not well understood how much information can be processed in the experimental equivalent stage. In particular, data compression is an important keyword and issue in image processing and multimedia processing in quantum information processing. A typical example of data compression in quantum computers is the quantum Fourier transform. With the experimental environment now available for simple simulations with quantum simulators developed by Google and IBM, we thought it would be possible to verify this. Still images taken with a 360 degrees camera are fulldome surround images which require 4K to 8K pixels, and the amount of data handled is much larger than that of high-definition quality still images. Therefore, when performing picture coding, it is desirable to efficiently reduce the amount of information while maintaining the quality of information as much as possible, and we wondered if this could be done by utilizing the knowledge of quantum information and computational science. Therefore, in this study, we experimentally examined the effectiveness, usefulness, and potential of quantum information and computational science for image compression by simulating the quantum Fourier transform in the data compression process of 360 degrees camera images using Qiskit. |
