In this technical report, we propose a point cloud classification method based on panoramic projected images of point clouds. Unlike images whose domain is defined as a uniform grid, point clouds consist of data points irregularly distributed in space. In point cloud classification, conventional deep learning methods often require complex architectures to address this characteristic, which in turn leads to high computational costs. To address this issue, we generate a panoramic image by projecting the point cloud onto an enclosing cylinder. This panoramic image is then classified using a convolutional neural network, which enables fast inference. To increase the robustness against index permutation and object rotations, we introduce a correction module that rotates the target point cloud to a suitable pose before classification. We evaluate the proposed method on the ModelNet40 dataset in numerical experiments and compare its performance with existing approaches. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves classification accuracy comparable to or even better than existing methods while significantly reducing computational time. |
