Dual-Layer Lossless Coding of Radiance HDR Images Using Quadratic Regression-Based Mantissa Estimation

(in English) In this study, we propose a dual-layer lossless coding method of Radiance HDR images (HDR images) using a quadratic regression-based mantissa estimation method, which extends our previously proposed method based on linear simple regression. Compared to conventional standard dynamic range (SDR) images, high dynamic range (HDR) images have a wider luminance range and provide representations closer to human visual perception. A widely used approach for HDR image compression is dual-layer coding, which consists of two layers: a ``base layer'' that encodes SDR images generated from HDR images, and an ``enhancement layer'' that encodes the residual signal between the SDR and HDR images. When the processing in the enhancement layer is reversible, the method becomes a dual-layer ``reversible'' coding. Our previously proposed method, which directly uses exponent and mantissa information in the enhancement layer and estimates the mantissa based on linear simple regression, is known for its fast processing and high compression efficiency. In this study, we enhance the estimation accuracy by replacing the linear simple regression with quadratic regression. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves higher coding performance while maintaining execution time comparable to the previous method.
