In recent years, deep learning-based speech synthesis technology has become capable of generating speech with high intelligibility. However, challenges remain in physically reproducing human-like voice quality and timbre. This study developed an air-driven speech robot aimed at mimicking the human vocalization process itself. The system consists of a vocal tract model featuring an exhalation flow device controlled by a stepping motor, a polyimide film-based reed-type artificial vocal fold, and a servo motor-driven tongue mechanism. By varying the thickness of the artificial vocal cords within the range of 50 to 250 µm, speech with a stable fundamental frequency of approximately 100 Hz was achieved using a 150 µm thick reed. Furthermore, by altering the shape of the vocal tract, we attempted to generate the Japanese vowels “a”, “i”, “u”, ‘e’, and “o”, and analyzed the formant frequencies F1 and F2 of the acquired speech. The results showed that the relative formant distribution for each vowel tended to be like that of human speech, but the range of frequency variation was not sufficient. Future work will aim to expand the range of formant variation and achieve speech generation closer to that of humans by improving the vocal tract dimensions and tongue mechanism. |
