The Effect of Depth Difference between Virtual Characters and Real Objects on Visibility in AR

We evaluated how the visibility of the virtual character is influenced by the relative-depth difference between the target real-world object and the virtual character when presenting virtual information onto a real-world object using AR. Specifically, we set five conditions for the depth difference—“Forward,” “Middle-Forward,” “Middle,” “Middle-Backward,” and “Backward”—and conducted a sensory test. In addition to these, we also compared cases where visual changes, such as blur or color, were applied to the virtual character and cases where they were not. The results showed that when no visual changes were applied to the virtual character, the response times for “Backward” was significantly longer than the response time for “Forward,” “Middle-Forward,” and “Middle.” |
