Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The purpose of this study was to establish a screening method for the early identification of elderly in dividuals at the boundary between independent living and requiring support. We conducted a 20-second stepping test with eyes open in elderly participants, certified as either independent or requiring support, to assess their balance. The motions during the test were measured using a commercially available motion sensor. We constructed classification model using whole-body joint data and analyzed the joint kinematic features that contributed to the classification. The results suggest that the coordinate features of the head and heel joints contributed significantly to the discrimination between the two groups. Furthermore, when the trained model was applied to data from elderly individuals with a total score of 4 on the Basic Checklist, the classification probabilities showed variability, indicating that these individuals possessed characteristics intermediate between the two groups. These results suggest that the proposed method may be effective for screening elderly individuals who are borderline before the need for suppor becomes apparent.
