This study proposes a novel approach to enhance therapeutic effects by replicating mirror therapy for hemiplegia rehabilitation using VR technology to create a highly immersive environment. Specifically, we developed a system that synchronizes the patient's fine finger movements with an avatar in VR in real time by applying video captured by the front-facing camera of a head-mounted display (HMD) to a pose estimation model to estimate finger joint information. Furthermore, to enhance the sense of body ownership toward the avatar in the virtual space, we introduced a novel multimodal presentation method that integrates haptic feedback via vibrotactile stimulation and interaction via fluid simulation based on the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. The performance evaluation results demonstrated that the proposed VR mirror therapy system is capable of practical real-time operation, even with fluid simulations involving 3 million particles. |
